As the holiday season approaches, many of us are gearing up for festive gatherings with friends and family. But with all the extra cooking, cleaning, and showering that comes along with hosting holiday parties, it’s easy for water usage to spike.

Here are a few simple tips for saving water during the holiday season:

Fix any leaks

Leaks can waste a significant amount of water, so it’s important to make sure your plumbing is in good working order. Before the holiday season gets into full swing, take some time to check your pipes and fixtures for leaks and have them repaired if necessary.

Don’t let the tap run

It may be tempting to let the tap run while you’re washing dishes or preparing food, but this can waste a lot of water. Instead, fill up a basin with soapy water for washing dishes, and use a bowl or measuring cup to rinse fruits and vegetables.

Have an Energy Star approved dishwasher? Save water by running a full dishwasher rather than hand washing.

Take shorter showers

With all the extra guests in your home, it’s likely that you’ll be using more hot water for showers. To conserve water, encourage your guests to take shorter showers.

Use a broom instead of a hose

When it comes to cleaning up outside, using a broom to sweep up leaves and debris is a much more water-efficient option than using a hose.

Thaw food without water

The safest and most water efficient way to defrost food is by placing it in the refrigerator. If you prefer to use water, fill up a small bowl for thawing and use the leftover water on your houseplants.

By following these simple tips, you can conserve water and save money on your water bill this holiday season. And, just as importantly, you’ll be doing your part to protect this valuable resource. Happy holidays!
